Dear colleagues,

We are happy to welcome you to the  ECRICE 2022 face-to-face conference at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, July 11-13, 2022.

It is a great honor for us to hold this important conference on chemistry education, which is recognized by EuChemS and to host the community of chemistry education researchers.

Research in chemistry education advances our understanding of how students learn chemistry and what we can do to enhance chemistry learning and teaching. We, the community of chemistry education researchers, study factors that either support or inhibit chemistry learning. We examine different learning environments and new ways in which technology can be integrated into chemistry teaching, and the relationship between chemistry, society, and other scientific disciplines. We look for elements that promote students’ motivation to study chemistry, and we constantly develop ways to prepare chemistry teachers and support their continuous development during their careers. In addition, we examine new emerging areas of research and development in chemistry education, as well as new pedagogies and technologies that might influence and advance our research and practice.

We therefore chose for the theme of conference:

“Chemistry Teaching and Learning in a Global Unified World”

This theme reflects the situation around  the world in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the challenges that chemistry education has to face. The fourth Sustainable Development goal of the UN is:

“Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” (SDG-4)

This emphasizes the importance of adequate education, which is even more essential in times of a worldwide pandemic. Teaching during COVID-19 has shifted to distance learning; consequently, teachers as well as students need to become acquainted with online learning, and to search for innovative and long-term strategies in order to effectively work under these difficult circumstances. This situation has affected chemistry education as well; however, research in chemistry education has provided effective tools to deal with the changing reality.

We invite you, the chemistry education researchers, to look at the conference strands, to submit your abstracts, and to participate in the ECRICE 2022 meeting.

Together with the Scientific and the Local Organizing Committee, we are looking forward to seeing you in Israel.

Enjoy the conference!

Sincerely,

Ron Blonder and Shelley Rap

ECRICE conference chair
