Join our team in the Crystallization Technology Unit (CTU) at Janssen Research & Development to develop novel comminution/bottom-up technology to produce stabilized nano- and micron-sized active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

We collaborate in project teams of various therapeutic areas such as oncology, immunology, and neuroscience, delivering APIs with consistent product quality and well-defined solid-state characteristics. As these properties directly influence metabolic uptake and in-vivo performance, our development work plays a crucial role in health-care supply to patients all around the globe.


To strengthen our research and development work in comminution, we are looking for a highly motivated Scientist or Senior Scientist with hands-on mentality and demonstrated knowledge in this field. The successful candidate will join our multidisciplinary team in the CTU-group, developing processes to alter material properties such as particle size distribution, morphology, bulk density, and powder flowability. As these properties impact the formulation, this work is performed in close collaboration with the Drug Product group.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Broaden the knowledge base of comminutions, conditioning, and particle size stabilization processes in the manufacturing of small molecules, peptides, and oligo nucleotides.
  • Independently conceptualize and conduct experimental studies to gain mechanistic insights and develop a scalable dry comminution and conditioning process
  • Develop predictive comminution models related to material properties
  • Provide feedback to the crystallization experts on API solid-state characteristics (crystallinity, size, stability, …) after grinding.
  • Capture, analyze, correlate, and interpret data from various sources: PAT data (Insitec, Relative humidity, PVM, IR spectroscopy), offline analytical data (SEM, UPLC, XRD, DSC, Laser Diffraction, …), etc.

Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team during process development, including (R&D chemists, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Product Development, API manufacturing) to keep a holistic overview and align on the project results.



  • Differentiation between scientist/senior scientist will be done based on experience level.


  • Education and/or research experience in the field of comminution techniques, (preferably a Ph.D. in Physics, (bio)chemical engineering, chemistry, Pharmacy…).
  • Candidates with a recent PhD will also be considered if they hold specific experience in the field of interest.
  • Knowledge of related analytical characterization techniques to investigate relaxation, crystallinity, and support process development such as: XRD, Raman, microscopy, IR, SEM Laser diffraction
  • Hands-on experience with conducting accurate data-rich lab experiments.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English and ability to cooperate in a team environment.

Nice to have:

  • Industrial experience with process development
  • Experience with process scale-up and/or technology transfer, moving from laboratory to pilot plant or production scale
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the group to various partners and collaborate with cross-functional project teams to design the best process
  • Strong track record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, or patents, or presentations at major national meetings is considered a plus.
